About this tool

Word limits are common in school essays, job applications, social media posts, product descriptions and search-result snippets. This counter shows the numbers you usually need in one place, so you do not have to count by hand.

Words are counted as groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Characters are counted as visible symbols, and emoji count as one character. Sentences are counted by looking for full stops, question marks and exclamation marks that are followed by a space or the end of the text. Abbreviations such as “U.S.A.” can make the sentence count slightly higher than you expect.

Reading time is an estimate based on an average adult reading speed of 200 words per minute. Real reading speed varies with the topic and the reader.

Common questions

How does the word counter count words?

It treats any run of letters, numbers or symbols between spaces or line breaks as one word. A hyphenated term such as “well-known” counts as one word.

Does it count spaces as characters?

Yes. The Characters box includes spaces and line breaks. The “Characters (no spaces)” box leaves them out.

Is there a limit on the amount of text?

There is no fixed limit. Very long texts (millions of characters) may make your browser slow.

Is my text stored or uploaded?

No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere by this page.
