How to use Password Generator

  1. A password is created for you as soon as the page opens.
  2. Choose the length (16 or more is a good choice) and which kinds of characters to include. A new password appears each time you change an option.
  3. Press Copy password, then paste it into the website or password manager where you need it. Press Generate new for a different one.

About this tool

A strong password is long and unpredictable. Humans are bad at making random choices, so passwords like “Summer2024!” are easy for attackers to guess. A generator picks every character at random, which makes the password much harder to guess.

This tool uses your browser’s secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), the same kind of randomness used for encryption. It does not fall back to a weaker method: if your browser does not offer secure randomness, the tool stops and tells you. When you choose several character types, at least one character of each type is included, and the order is then shuffled.

The strength shown is an estimate based on length and the number of different characters available, assuming the password was made randomly and is used only on one site. It is guidance, not a guarantee. Use a different password for every account, store them in a password manager rather than in a document or email, and turn on two-step verification where possible.

Privacy: This tool runs in your browser. What you type or choose is not sent to a server by this website.

Common questions

Is the password stored or sent anywhere?

No. It is created in your browser and exists only on this page. When you close or reload the page, it is gone, so copy it before you leave.

How long should my password be?

For important accounts, 16 characters or more with a mix of character types is a good choice. Longer is stronger. Some websites limit the length or the symbols they accept; if so, untick Symbols or shorten it.

Why avoid look-alike characters?

Characters such as l, 1, I, O and 0 are easy to confuse when you have to type a password by hand. Avoiding them makes it easier to read, with a very small drop in strength.

Is it safe to use a password made on a website?

This one is created entirely in your browser and not transmitted. As with any tool, you should use a trusted device and a password manager to store the result.
