How to use Unit Converter
- Choose a category, such as Length or Temperature.
- Type the value you want to convert and choose the unit it is in (From) and the unit you want (To).
- The answer appears at once. Use Swap to reverse the two units, and look at the table to see the value in every other unit.
About this tool
Unit conversion comes up when you follow a recipe from another country, compare distances in kilometres and miles, check a weight limit, read a weather forecast or work out how much storage a file needs.
Conversions use exact standard factors, for example 1 inch = 2.54 centimetres, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms and 1 mile = 1,609.344 metres. Volume units labelled US are US customary units; the UK gallon is listed separately because it is larger. Temperature uses formulas rather than a single factor, and values below absolute zero (−273.15 °C) are rejected.
Digital storage has two systems. Decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB, PB) use 1,000 as the step, which is what drive makers and many operating systems show. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) use 1,024 as the step, which some software uses. Both are listed so you can pick the one you need. Results are shown with up to 10 significant digits, and very large or very small numbers use scientific notation (for example 1.5e-7).

Common questions
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Choose Temperature, set From to Celsius and To to Fahrenheit. The formula is °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes. A mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes. The gap grows with larger units.
Are US and UK gallons different?
Yes. A US gallon is about 3.785 litres and a UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 litres.
Why do I see numbers like 1.5e-7?
That is scientific notation for very small or very large numbers. 1.5e-7 means 0.00000015.
